ZAE Bayern is a young research institute which has built up a wealth of know-how and competence in the few years since its foundation. Basic financing from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology (BayStMWIVT) is a prerequisite for successful R&D at the institute. Staff and Premises

At the end of 2008, ZAE Bayern had 178 staff members. There was a rise in the number of employees due to the further increase in project volume. The majority of the employees came from the fields of physics, mechanical engineering and materials science. Women made up 28% of the staff. The institute provided 23 doctorate students, 31 graduands, 14 students and two trainees with the means to further their education. Students and trainees constituted 39% of the staff.

ZAE Bayern has a usable floor space of 3,260 m², 1,600 m² of which are laboratory areas. The laboratory areas comprise:
•Garching 500 m²
•Würzburg 660 m² (350 m² of which is in external premises)
•Erlangen440 m² (190 m² of which is in premises in Alzenau)

ZAE Bayern has its own buildings in Würzburg and Garching. The division in Erlangen rents rooms at the Innovation and Start-Up Centre (IGZ).
