Budget and Finances
In 2009, the institute’s budget came to € 6.6 m. The development of income from 2005 to 2010 depicted in the figure shows that the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology (BayStMWIVT) provided basic funding amounting to € 1.9 m in 2009. Approx. € 4.5 m third-party funds were raised as well as € 0.2 m other revenues. The third-party funds comprise € 2.7 m from public project funding and € 1.8 m from industrial sources.
The institute’s expenditure in 2009 comprises € 4.9 m in personnel costs, € 1.3 m in material costs and € 0.4 m in investments.
Research was carried out in a total of 277 projects involving 259 partners.

Development of Budget 2005 - 2010
Staff and Premises
At the end of 2009, ZAE Bayern had 175 staff members.
The majority of the employees came from the fields of physics, mechanical engineering and materials science.
Women made up 26 % of the staff. The institute provided 28 doctorate students, 25 graduands and7 students with the means to further their education. Students and trainees constituted 34 % of the staff. ZAE Bayern has a usable floor space of 3,260 m2, 1,600 m2 of which are laboratory areas. The laboratory areas comprise:
Garching 500 m2
Würzburg 660 m2 (350 m2 of which is in external premises)
Erlangen 440 m2 (190 m2 of which is in premises inAlzenau)
ZAE Bayern has its own buildings in Würzburg and Garching. The division in Erlangen rents rooms at the Innovation and Start-Up Centre (IGZ).
